The Model Context Protocol turns funding data from something you paste into a chat window into tools an assistant can call. The OpenGrants MCP server exposes search, matching, pipeline and alerts as tools, so an assistant can check live listings instead of guessing from training data or a stale PDF.
There are two ways to use it, and they serve different people. The hosted server at https://mcp.opengrants.io/mcp is for a person working in their own MCP client under their own OpenGrants account. A server you build yourself is for your members, running your guardrails and your key. This lesson covers both.
