When a funding search feels thin, the data is rarely the problem. The usual cause is a mismatch between how the user typed and how the search was told to match. On the OpenGrants API that mismatch is one parameter, search_mode, and its default is the one that fails people who type in sentences.
This lesson covers the three modes and how each ranks, when each one wins, how to compose filters without hiding half the results, how to page and cache, and how to test relevance with your own members’ queries instead of guessing.
