Federal awards are the center of the non-dilutive map, but the edges are where timing problems get solved. State programs can pay part of what it costs to write a federal proposal, match a federal award after you win it, or fund commercialization work federal R&D money doesn’t cover. Prizes pay for results instead of proposals. Corporate and foundation programs come with terms you have to read as carefully as a term sheet.

None of this money is automatic, and most of it is conditional on location, on a prior federal award, or on funding being available that year. This lesson teaches you how to find it, read the conditions, and place it on your map.
